VC5889GC: "Fairy"/ Christmas/Box

This fabulous and rare German wax over papier mache Christmas FAIRY (different from the more common angel) is all original and dates circa 1880.She still wears her original costume. She was likely dressed in England for the English market there, as Christmas fairies were originally an English tradition. They were considered bringers of the Christmas tree, light, etc. This special and very sweet fairy is presented in an original or contemporary wooden box. The box is very old and does show variations in color, some chipping of the wood, staining and overall aging. There are two grooves, one on each side of the interior where it looks like another piece of wood might have slid, acting as a platform . It's location is at the correct level where her shoes would have been located in an original presentation. This lovely fairy measures 15" tall. She has a cloth body which feels like it is stuffed with excelsior. Composition or papier mache painted arms are in good condition with original paint. Fabulous lower legs with painted white stockings with blue lines at the top and pumpkin colored boots! Some crazing or cracking to boots, but it looks minor. Originally she wore a pink crinoline dress which has deteriorated for the most part, although remnants remain which adds to her appeal as a lovely truly antique holiday item. Her underdress is cotton, as are her underclothes, which are all original. Her dress is embellished with strands of silver colored tinsel and some areas have tiny silver colored balls. She does still have her fairy wand, which is essential for being in the fairy business and heralding in the English festivities! This special fairy was an aqua ribbon bow at her neck and she wears earrings! She wears a tiara of silver tinsel with lametta and her crinoline wings are also accented with silver tinsel. All the antique tinsel has warmed to a dark patina. She was not undressed, for to do so would have damaged her original costume. She has molded painted hair, with painted eyebrows, painted lips and set brown glass eyes. She has fine scratches to the wax and a crack near one eye, some crazing near the other one. Overall condition, for the these early wax over dolls, is very good! Her box is worn and shows staining, etc. It measures 19" X 8" X 5".
