VC7804ZT: German Nodding Santa

This impressive large papier mâché German clockwork nodding Father Christmas dates circa 1900. He stands an incredible 27" tall!. He has a beautiful painted face with pale blue eyes, rose blushed cheeks, and a rosy nose. Painted closed mouth. Painted white eyebrows and fabulous original curly mohair beard, with some mohair peeking out of his cap or hood. He wears his original heavy velvet jacket, accented with a curly wool grayish trim. His hat is also trimmed. Black belt and silver buckle with old patina to metal accents his jacket around thee waist. His trousers are also velvet, in a slate/charcoal color. Papier mache boots are painted black and accented with mica flakes to suggest sparkling snow. His wooden base is also mica covered. In one hand he holds a decorated feather tree (some wear to paint on fingers). In the crook of his elbow on the other side, he carries an armful of goodies--jointed antique all bisque dolls, a celluloid doll in net stocking, mica dusted maravian stars, a lace trimmed cracker for celebrating, an antique book, etc. His head does come off the body, if desired. There are wire loops where his head can be positioned and a metal rod which can be inserted into a metal ring at the back of the head to secure it. He works wonderfully, when his head is allowed to rock to and fro, as if "nodding". Keywind at back by belt. Key included. There is some wear to the painted finish of boots and some crazing, but overall condition is wonderful. A MUST for an important holiday collection!
