VCK28G: Santa on Bear
This is an amazing and rare Christmas holiday decoration which features Father Christmas riding atop a brown bear with metal wheels. This dates circa 1900-1925 and is a rare large size. Father Christmas is papier mache, painted facial features, including wrinkles at forehead , edges of eyes, etc.Blushed cheeks. Real fur beard is full and fluffy. Papier mache hand up to about elbow area, then wire aperture, so one can position, bend, pose, etc his arms. One hand carries a fluffy feather tree branch with variegated shades of light and medium green. He wears a rare butterscoth velvet coat iwth hood, accented with cotton trim. Rope belt. Painted black papier mache boots extend to mid calf and then wire, so legs can be positioned on the bear. A little teeny rub on tip of nose. Santa, alone, measures about 13" in a semi seated position. The fabulous bear is quite intimidating, with its wide open mouth, with carved and painted teeth and tongue. He wears a leather muzzle or bridal. Glass eyes. His nose appears to be metal with just a small fleck of black paint missing . Metal wheels are wonderful, but fragile. You want to make sure the wheels are positioned where they will carry the weight of the bear. I think they are all original to the bear, despite some differences in patina of metal. Cocoa brown bristle has somewhat worn overall, especially around nose, tips of ears, etc, He IS vintage, so there will be signs of use or wear. In my opinion, however, condition is wonderful. The bear measures from back leg to snout 18", and about 10" tall. With Santa seated upon him, the overall height is 16". Please view all my photos and I do have more, so please email me. Photos are part of the desription and may show wear I have not indicated, although I try to be overly critical in my descriptions. A wonderful and outstanding Father Christmas riding a bear!
