AJ2011MAR4GK: Divine Vinaigrette/Sapphires
This is the most opulent and lavishly decorated vinaigrette we have ever seen! If you like collecting works of art that feature decadent, opulent and lavish embellishments, this item is for you! It is simply a work of art. Possibly French in origin, it dates from the 19th century. A vinaigrette was a small box-like container that was used by ladies from the mid 18th century until the early 19th century. The vinaigrette housed a sponge steeped in aromatic vinegar.and was held to the nose whenever a lady encountered unpleasant odors. This silver case is highly decorated on the sides, back and front. The lid features a lovely handpainted scene on ivory, in rich colors. The entire lid is embellished with a multitude of faceted sapphires and pomegranate red ruby cabochons. The case measures 3" X 2" and condition, aside from aging to the silver, is outstanding. Truly a remarkable piece!
