DB5415JB: Washington/WPA
This puppet or marionette dates from the 1930s, and was created by the United States Federal Works Progress Administration later called the Works Projects Administration. George Washington has papier mache head with yarn hair and painted facial features, a cloth body, and wooden hands. Condition is overall very good with some typical age discoloration to the fabric and wear to papier mache face, in particular, the high points. Strings and wooden sticks attached to the parts of the puppet allow one to control and "animate" the puppet. A great example of very desirable Depression era folk art toys.
